Former Manchester United striker Dong joins Chinese club

25/12/2011

Beijing: Former Manchester United striker Dong Fangzhuo has joined Chinese first division football league side Hunan Xiangtao.

Former Manchester United striker Dong joins Chinese club

Fangzhou joined the Chinese club from Mika in the Armenian Premier League.

"I am back home," Dong said. "But my return to China doesn't mean that I am incapable of playing abroad."

The 26-year-old Dong, who joined Mika in March, scored six goals for the club, including one each in the semi-final and final when they won the title of the Armenian FA Cup.

"Mika wanted to extend the contract with me, but I refused," he said.

Dong signed for Manchester United from Dalian Shide in January 2004, for an initial fee of 500,000 pounds which could have risen to 3.5 million, depending upon appearances.

But he failed to impress Alex Ferguson in the following four years. For most of the time, he played on loan for Royal Antwerp in Belgium, where he scored 37 goals in three seasons.

He went back to Manchester United in 2007 but played only three times in the Premier League. His contract was terminated in 2008.

Dong then joined home team Dalian Shide in the Chinese Super League but struggled to score goals and was relegated to the reserves as a result.

His poor performances in the league also prevented him from being called up for the national team.

"This time I am sure I will play well in China," Dong said.

Rosneft passes ExxonMobil to become world's top oil producer

Russia's state-run Rosneft oil company has become the world's largest producer after surpassing U.S. giant ExxonMobil, Voice of Russia radio reported Thursday (Dec. 22). The difference in their volumes of production is about 1 million tons, a small amount compared with their total production. Not only is the Russian company planning to preserve its position, it also intends to improve its key indicators.

Rosneft boasts oil production facilities in northern Russia, Siberia and the Far East, as well as seven refineries. Since 2004, it has been working at the world's largest oil deposits. In the past nine months, it has produced almost 90 million metric tons of oil, leaving the American company behind. At the same time, Rosneft has huge potential, said Natalya Shulyar, an expert in the fuel and energy sector.

"Considering that Russia is the world's largest oil producer, it's no surprise that Rosneft has reached the world's top position in production. The company is developing fast and is investing in new projects, that's why, it has good prospects," Shulyar said.

Rosneft projects include development of offshore oil fields and of the Vankor oil and gas field in East Siberia. The oil extracted from the Vankor field will fill the East Siberia-Pacific oil pipeline. Moreover, the company is involved in developing the Carabobo-2 oil field in Venezuela.

Despite its success in oil production the Russian company's overall production of hydrocarbons is half the amount extracted by its main competitor, ExxonMobil. Rosneft has set itself a target to improve its performance in other key areas by 2012 -- the production of natural gas and gas condensate. To this end, it needs to concentrate on expanding into new regions, an expert in energy issues, Sergei Pikin, told Voice of Russia in an interview.

"Unlike all the Russian oil and gas companies, ExxonMobil is a multinational company," Pikin said. "Consequently, the potential for Rosneft's development lies in the diversification of its regions of operation, which will help expand the resource base and bring it closer to major oil-consuming centers. This model would help the company to receive additional preferences."

Rosneft and ExxonMobil are partners as well as competitors. A few months ago, the companies agreed to conduct joint exploration of oil fields in the Arctic, while at the same time Russia will get an opportunity to extract oil from U.S. oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico and in Texas.

San Rafael digital newsletter startup hopes to boost community engagement

Father-son teams (l to r) of Eric and Paul Remer and Johan and Collin Wikman, all of San Rafael, have collaborated on various startups over the years. They recently launched Kontribune, an interactive newsletter and community journalism company. (IJ photo/Robert Tong)

After more than a decade of collaborating on various startups, Paul Remer and Johan Wikman have teamed up with their two sons to launch Kontribune, a digital newsletter company.

Based in an in-law unit behind Wikman's San Rafael home, Kontribune helps organizations that previously relied on traditional paper newsletters go digital with a highly interactive but user-friendly template that connects to social media. It also aims to promote community journalism.

"This notion of a monthly, quarterly newsletter we believe is a thing of the past," said Wikman, 48.

"What we're really wanting is to engage the community and give everyone an equal voice," added Remer, 54. "We have a much bigger vision about building tools for community."

Remer, Wikman and Wikman's 24-year-old son, Collin Wikman, are all co-founders of the company. Remer's 26-year-old son, Eric Remer, is Kontribune's first employee.

Remer and Wikman previously worked together at wireless carrier software firm Siterra, which Remer co-founded. The company employed about 75 people at its peak and was originally based in Novato before moving to San Francisco several years ago.

The pair also co-founded Keibi Technologies, which developed moderation tools for online comments and other user-generated content.

Since the first Kontribune site launched this fall, the company has set up sites for between 20 and 25 other organizations. Roughly 75 percent of its clients are

nonprofit groups and most are based in the Bay Area, Remer and Wikman said.

Customers so far include the Agricultural Institute of Marin, the Canal Alliance and the YMCA of San Francisco, which plans to use its page to engage with employees, Remer said.

All sites run on the same template so far, but controls for privacy and many other features are customizable. For example, site managers can allow anyone to upload stories, specify who may contribute or opt to make the site completely private. Some extended families are using the private option to share updates, photographs and videos in a closed, interactive environment, Remer and Wikman said.

Site managers also have the option of running advertisements and linking their Kontribune site to social media accounts. Monthly charges for a Kontribune site start at around $30, although the rates for families with closed sites are much lower, Remer said.

"The idea is that it's so configurable that it really fits everybody," said Wikman, a former engineering manager at San Francisco-based game company Zynga.

"It's designed to be self-service," Remer added. "There's no programming or HTML required."

Erik Hernandez, a youth education advocate at the Canal Alliance, said he has been using Kontribune to publish a student newspaper with about 10 eighth-, ninth- and tenth-graders.

So far the site is invitation-only as students get up to speed on writing stories, but Hernandez said he hopes to open it up to a larger audience by next summer.

"What I liked about (Kontribune) is it's very easy to use ? it's almost like having your own Facebook profile but then you upload stories, and it's almost like SFGate or Marin IJ," Hernandez said. "It's very accessible because you can do all the controls. ... For me it's like, 'Wow, you can just upload the pictures and if you want to put a video in, you just put the link to YouTube.'"

The Agricultural Institute of Marin has been experimenting with its Kontribune site for a couple of months and eventually hopes to get farmers and customers to contribute stories, said Emmett Brady, a farmers market manager for the institute.

"We've been using it more like a living newsletter," Brady said. "It's sort of like the next step in newsletters and it doesn't remain static and it's not like you're creating news just for a newsletter. With this we can ... update it on a need-to basis."

Meanwhile, Mill Valley resident and Tweetup organizer Sally Kuhlman said she has been using Kontribune for her Sally Around the Bay site and likes "the community building aspect, which allowed me to give others permission to add content, freeing up my time" as well as "the potential for future ad revenue.

"(It's) very easy to include ads on the side," Kuhlman said in an email. "(A) selling point to advertisers is the targeted audience, for example most of my Kontribune readers are local Marinites."

The co-founders have been self-funding the startup thus far but will consider potential angel investment early next year, Remer said. They hope to be profitable by the end of 2012.

Paris Saint-Germain fades away

By JEROME PUGMIRE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:40 p.m. ET Dec. 14, 2011

PARIS (AP) -Big-spending Paris Saint-Germain crashed out of the Europa League on Wednesday, a costly exit for an ambitious French club desperate for silverware and one which increases the pressure on coach Antoine Kombouare.

PSG grabbed two goals in the last five minutes at Parc des Princes to beat Athletic Bilbao 4-2, but it was all for nothing as Salzburg won 3-2 at Slovan Bratislava to join Bilbao as Group F's qualifiers for the last 32.

"It's very disappointing. We honestly could have got through in this group," said Kombouare, whose future is under heavy scrutiny. "But when your qualification comes down to one game and your destiny is no longer in your own hands, then things become difficult."

Lazio, Besiktas, Wisla Krakow and Steaua Bucharest were the other teams to qualify for the knockout phase on Wednesday.

Wisla's progress from Group K was sealed in dramatic circumstances, beating FC Twente 2-1 and then seeing Fulham concede a goal to Odense with 10 seconds remaining in stoppage time to draw 2-2. The English club, finalists in 2010, would have gone through with a win.

The remaining four berths are up for grabs on Thursday, with the draw for the last 32 being made on Friday.

PSG's wealthy Qatari backers, QSI, spent ?82 million ($116 million) on new signings at the start of the season, but the club is now out of both the League Cup and the Europa League.

Kombouare's position has been under the microscope in recent weeks after the club's sporting director Leonardo admitted he had met with former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti.

After Wednesday's game, Leonardo denied suggestions that PSG midfielder Claude Makelele is in line to replace Kombouare in an interim role before a bigger name takes over.

"It's good to talk about this possibility, but we never offered him this position," Leonardo said.

Defender Jon Aurtenetxe gave Bilbao an early lead and David Lopez equalized for the Spanish side after Javier Pastore and Mathieu Bodmer put PSG 2-1 up.

Midfielder Inigo Perez's own goal and substitute striker Guillaume Hoarau's penalty sealed PSG's win, which was ultimately in vain after Salzburg came from two goals down inside the first six minutes to secure second place in the group.

Lazio was the other big name threatened by early elimination from Europe's second-tier club competition on Wednesday but the Italian side avoided the same fate as PSG.

Libor Kozak and Giuseppe Sculli scored the goals as Lazio qualified in second place in Group D with a 2-0 win over pool winner Sporting Lisbon. FC Vaslui could have still denied Lazio a last-32 spot by beating FC Zurich, but the Romanian team lost 2-0 in Switzerland.

Besiktas leapfrogged Stoke to finish top of Group E by rallying to a 3-1 victory over the English club, which had already clinched its place in the knockout phase.

Fulham looked to be cruising through when it went 2-0 ahead by the 31st minute following goals by United States midfielder Clint Dempsey - his third goal in the competition - and Kerim Frei.

However, the English club paid the price for sitting back and protecting its lead, with Hans Henrik Andreasen halving the deficit in the 64th and substitute Djiby Fall grabbing a dramatic equalizer with the final touch of the game.

"It was the last cross of the match, so I'm very, very disappointed," Fulham manager Martin Jol said.

Wisla did its part by ending Twente's unbeaten record in the group, although the Dutch club had already qualified as group winners.

Steaua, the 1986 European champions, pipped Maccabi Haifa to second place behind Schalke in Group J by beating AEK Larnaca 3-1. Maccabi slumped to a 3-0 home loss to Schalke, which had already qualified.

Anderlecht sealed top spot in Group L with a perfect record by winning 5-3 at home to Lokomotiv Moscow, in a match between two teams who had already gone through.

Anderlecht striker Matias Suarez scored for the seventh time in this season's competition, helping the Belgian club reach a total of 18 goals from its six group games.

Human tumor viruses contribute to 15-20% of human cancers worldwide. Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) is an etiological agent for Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and two other rare lymphoproliferative malignancies. KS is the most common cancer in HIV-infected untreated individuals and remains a primary cause of cancer deaths in many subequatorial African countries as a result of the AIDS pandemic. Researchers at the Institute of Biotechnology and Research Programs Unit (Genome-Scale Biology) at the University of Helsinki have discovered a novel viral oncogenesis mechanism in which KSHV oncogenes co-opt cellular signaling pathways and modify the cellular microenvironment more permissive for viral replication.

The findings by the group of Research Professor Pivi Ojala (Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki) demonstrates the first lymphatic-specific endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) induced by a human tumor virus. The virus-induced EndMT can contribute to development of KS by giving rise to infected, invasive cells, and providing the virus a permissive cellular microenvironment for efficient spread of the virus.

"This information can be used for developing targeted therapies to prevent or at least slow down the progression of KS in immunosuppressed patients", Dr. Ojala says.

By developing a novel three-dimensional (3D) cell model to better mimic the in vivo microenvironment, the researchers show that KSHV induces transcriptional reprogramming of primary lymphatic endothelial cells (LEC) to mesenchymal cells via EndMT, a process implicated in promoting tumor growth and cell invasiveness. Mesenchymal markers were found co-distributed in the same cells with KSHV in primary KS tumor samples, suggesting that the 3D culture in this work succeeds in recapitulating the known heterogeneity of the cell types in KS tumors.

The results also reveal a key enzyme in cancer cell invasion, MT1-MMP, as a previously unrecognized signaling molecule downstream of Notch to induce EndMT. Moreover, the 3D KSHV-LEC transcriptome showed significant up-regulation of invasion related genes, that were found co-regulated in 3D KSHV-LECs and KS biopsies and suggesting that virus-induced EndMT may contribute to development of KS. The results further demonstrate that the 3D culture provides a permissive microenvironment for continuous viral replication and persistence, indicating the importance of virus-cell interactions for viral spread and thereby for oncogenesis.

"The unraveled molecular mechanisms can lead to identification of novel cellular targets for pharmacological control in virus-associated cancers", Dr. Ojala says.

This work is a collaboration between the research teams headed by Kaisa Lehti, Kari Alitalo, Lauri Aaltonen, and Sampsa Hautaniemi (all from University of Helsinki), Chris Boshoff (UCL Cancer Institute, University College London) and Adam Grundhoff (Heinrich Pette Institute-Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology). The project involves scientists from two Academy of Finland National Centre of Excellence Programs, the Translational Genome-Scale Biology and Cancer Biology.

Russia's TNK-BP to invest $10 Bln in Arctic (AP)

MOSCOW ? TNK-BP, a Russian joint venture of British oil giant BP, said Wednesday it will invest up to $10 billion in developing Arctic oilfields.

The company, half-owned by BP and Russian billionaires, said in a statement that up to $10 billion will be spent on building infrastructure at the fields and a pipeline that will link them with the export pipeline.

Russian oil companies have been drawing up plans to move to the oil and gas-rich Arctic as mature fields in Western Siberia are getting depleted.

TNK-BP said an agreement with Russia's pipeline monopolist Transneft will allow it to connect its Arctic oil fields to the export pipeline in Russia's Far East mainly aimed at Chinese customers.

TNK-BP will be able to ship oil through the Zapolyaryev-Purpe pipeline, which is expected to be built by 2016 to become a key link between Arctic resources and the main east and westbound pipeline routes.

The company said it expects to start shipments from new fields in the Yamal region in 2015. Its fields in the region are estimated to hold 5 billion barrels of oil.

TNK-BP's executive German Khan described in the statement cooperation between oil companies and state-owned Transneft as "one of the most important conditions for putting new fields into development and efficiently developing the abundant resources of the region."

Amanda Knox hires attorney for possible book deal

Amanda Knox, who was cleared of murder and freed from prison by an Italian court in October, has hired a prominent Washington, D.C.-based lawyer as she considers possible book deals, her spokesman said on Monday.

Knox, 24, has retained attorney Robert Barnett "to represent her in discussions with various book publishers who have expressed an interest in Amanda writing a book," spokesman David Marriott said.

Slideshow: A murder in Italy

"Mr. Barnett will also assist Amanda and her family in evaluating other opportunities as well," Marriott said in a statement.

Marriott did not elaborate on those additional opportunities but said few details of a potential book had been yet decided by Knox and her family, including an advance or the possibility of co-authors.

Barnett has previously represented President Barack Obama, former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, singer Barbra Streisand and a host of other political and entertainment luminaries in book deals.

Video: Supporters in Seattle react to Knox verdict

The announcement comes a day after a Seattle-based literary agent announced that she had agreed to represent Knox's 27-year-old former Italian boyfriend and co-defendant in the sensational murder case, Raffaele Sollecito.

"This is a case I have followed from day one and never, not even for one moment, have I doubted the innocence of Raffaele Sollecito and Amanda Knox," agent Sharlene Martin said in a statement announcing that deal.

Knox, then a college student studying in Italy, and Sollecito were convicted in 2009 of murdering her 21-year-old British housemate, Meredith Kercher in what prosecutors said was a drug-fueled sexual assault.

Story: The major players in the Amanda Knox trial

An Italian appeals court overturned their convictions in October after independent forensic investigators sharply criticized police scientific evidence in the original investigation, saying it was unreliable.

Knox made a tearful return to her hometown of Seattle last month, saying she was "overwhelmed" by her ordeal and return.

Her father said at the time that the former University of Washington student, whose trial gripped attention on both sides of the Atlantic, had not agreed to any media deals.

Hitch a ride to a snowbound cabin

Elk Lake Resort

Elk Lake Resort in central Oregon shuttles guests 11 miles to their snowbound cabins via snowcat or a Suburban on tracks.

By Colleen McBrinn, msnbc.com contributor

Book your snowbound cabin nestled in the woods, pack your food and cross-country skis, grab the kids?? and don?t forget to reserve the snowcat.

A handful of snowbound lodges and resorts in the Northwest are making winter adventures more accessible for families by throwing in a little help: Stocked cabins, reached by burly snowcats.

Skiers and snowshoers can rent rustic to luxury log cabins loaded with linens, cookware and firewood ? and an option for a snowcat to carry in up to 12 people plus food and gear. Young kids and those not up to getting there on their own can ride in the snowcat while others ski or snowshoe the usually three to 10 miles from the nearest road in to the cabins.

Tucked in the Cascade Mountain range about 35 miles south of Bend, Ore., the snowbound Paulina Lake Lodge operates 11 rustic huts roughly three miles from a snow park. Visitors have a few options for reaching the cabins, which range from $100 to $265 per night: ski or snowshoe in, ride in a snowcat or rent a snowmobile.??

Bend residents Jenny Blechman and Tim Carney have cross-country skied in to the Paulina Lake huts two years in a row with their two young boys, along with other families. The second year, two parents rode with all 5 kids in the snowcat while the other adults enjoyed skiing in. The three families split the $150 round-trip snowcat cost, rented a cozy cabin together, and during the day tag-teamed, with some adults skiing while others played in the snow with the kids.

?The snowcats give us the freedom to continue our adventures with the kids in tow,? Blechman said. ?It?s doable without the extra transport, but it sure makes things easier ? and for travel with kids, easier is always best.?

In addition to food and gear, Blechman said the snowcat hauled in the kids? skis, travel cribs and baby seats ? things they wouldn?t have been able to carry on their backs while skiing.

Paulina Lake Lodge co-owner Karen Brown said most families have been coming for years and making full use of the snowcat shuttle.

?We have kids that I?ve watched grow up,? she said. ?We only see them once or twice a year, but it?s really a family atmosphere up here. We have one kid graduating in June that started coming as a little one.?

Paulina Lake Lodge also rents snowmobiles for guided tours or for visitors to ride in and keep at the cabins. The lodge, built in the 1920s, is now a full cocktail bar and restaurant, which gives?guests the option to eat there as well as cook in the cabins.

Nearby, Elk Lake Resort offers 13 snowbound cabins ranging from very rustic ($29 per night, sleeps two) to a 3,000-foot luxury cabin ($459 per night, sleeps 10). Resort staff shuttle in?guests ??those not skiing the 11 miles in ? on a snowcat or hefty Suburban on tracks for $40 per person roundtrip.?

?A lot of families wouldn?t be able to come here without the snowcat or Suburban,? said co-owner Mitch Cole. ?We?re passionate about making this resort accessible to families, mostly because my partners and I have kids, too. It?s amazing to see kids up here for the first time in their own private, snowbound resort. They have a blast.?

Those looking for a really special, snowy treat for a family reunion or big gathering can rent Silcox Hut perched above Mt. Hood?s Timberline Lodge, about an hour?s drive from Portland, Ore. At 7,000 feet, it?s Oregon?s highest hotel. For $175 per person per night during the weekend (kids a little less), you get lodging, dinner, breakfast and snowcat transportation. Kids too young to downhill ski can romp in the snow outside the hut or down at Timberline Lodge, which also offers ski and snowplay programs for kids.

Other backcountry huts are scattered throughout the Northwest, but few come with snowcat services. The Rendezvous Huts in Washington?s Methow Valley along the eastern flanks of the North Cascades are dotted about every five miles along 21 miles of groomed Nordic ski trails. While the Methow Valley Sport Trails Association doesn?t have snowcat transportation, it does offer a freight hauling service for food and gear. This can lighten parents? loads so while cross-country skiing, they can pull young kids in to the huts on their own Chariots (kid trailers on skis attached to a waist harness).

The snow season for these resorts and lodges starts in mid-December and lasts through mid-March, depending on snow level.??

Stealthy cellphone software stirs outcry

(AP) ? Technology bloggers are asking if our cellphones are spying on us after a security researcher said a piece of software hidden on millions of phones was recording virtually everything people do with them.

Amid a broad outcry, Sen. Al Franken is calling for an investigation. A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the software's maker, Carrier IQ Inc. of Mountain View, California

The software, which Carrier IQ says is used on some 150 million mobile devices, appears relatively innocuous. It does watch what owners of Sprint Nextel Corp. and AT&T Inc. smartphones do with them, including what people type and the numbers they dial. But it doesn't seem to transmit every keystroke to the company. Instead, it kicks into action when there's a problem, like a call that doesn't go through, and it lets the phone company know.

"It is software that is developed in partnership with carriers with the intent to improve network performance. As far as we can tell, it meets this description in execution," said Tim Wyatt, principal engineer at Lookout, a cellphone security company.

"In line with our privacy policy, we solely use CIQ software data to improve wireless network and service performance," AT&T said in a statement.

Carrier IQ says the data its software gathers is stored by the phone companies or at Carrier IQ's facilities. It doesn't sell the data to third parties. Phone companies, of course, already are custodians of a wealth of private information, including whom you call, where you surf and what your text messages say.

The brouhaha started a few weeks ago, when a programmer named Trevor Eckhart documented Carrier IQ's workings with videos on his blog. The software company threatened him with a lawsuit if he didn't take the information down. The Electronic Frontier Foundation took on Eckhart's case, and the company backed down.

Eckhart posted another video this week, showing Carrier IQ's software logging keystrokes on an HTC EVO 3D from Sprint.

A central privacy worry is what kind of data Carrier IQ is retaining.

Andrew Coward, a Carrier IQ vice president, said the software doesn't record every keystroke or send information about all of them back to the company. The only keystrokes it cares about are specific administrative commands, including those instructing the software to phone "home." The rest it discards, Coward said.

"We never expected to need the content of SMS messages, so we didn't code for it," Coward told The Associated Press in an interview.

Apple Inc. has said it has stopped supporting Carrier IQ in most of its products. Separately, the company came under fire last year over location-tracking features of the iPhone and made a software change to keep data on users' movements for less time.

For now, there's no easy way to uninstall the Carrier IQ software without unsanctioned third-party software. Coward said it is "too early to tell" whether the company will make any substantial changes to the software because of the uproar.

Two talented 'X Factor' contestants go home

Fox

Simon admitted he might have been wrong to let Drew Ryniewicz sing so many slow songs.

By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

Someone is going to get a $5 million recording contract later this month thanks to ?X Factor,? but two of the acts who seemed the best bets to become that kind of star were voted off the show Thursday.

The more predictable one was Astro. This is not a show that a teenage hip-hop artist could expect to do well in, and he did well to last as long as he did. It wasn?t a big shock that he was the lowest vote-getter. But if you were betting on someone to wind up making it big out of this group of contestants, it might be him.

Or it might be Drew. The teenager found herself in a sing-off with Marcus Canty, which clearly came as a stunner to both her and mentor Simon Cowell. Simon, in fact, was so surprised that he actually humbled himself in his efforts to save her, an act most experts had previously considered to be impossible.

?The reason Drew?s in this position tonight is my fault. I take total, full responsibility,? he said. ?I should have listened to what everyone else was saying.?

?I?m begging these two to give her another chance, I really am,? he then said, referring to the critical votes of Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul.

Well, let?s review for a second. Here?s what everyone else had been saying about her: Drew has a lovely voice and it would be great if she would at some point sing something that wasn?t as slow and deadening as the typical Steve Jones pause before he announces the results.

Here?s what Simon said in response: Forget those no-talent hacks next to me on the podium. I know best, she?ll keep doing what she?s doing, and if you don?t like it you can go pound sand.

As it turns out, the other three were correct in their assessment. But Simon was right about one thing .... the judges made the wrong call in sending Drew home. She was much better than Canty, both Thursday night and throughout the competition, and is far more likely to become a recording star than he is.

If you were searching for storylines, you might point out that Simon couldn?t expect the women to do him a favor tonight after he?s spent the past couple of months belittling them. All those jibes at Nicole probably aren?t going to get her to take his side in a dispute.

Two other factors were more likely explanations, however. The first is that at the end of the night there are only five singers left in the competition, and had the judges saved Drew then there of the singers would have been girls. Better to mix things up than to let one judge dominate.

But the ultimate reason is that Simon?s mea culpa was right. By ignoring what the judges had said about her over the past few weeks, Simon and Drew set themselves up for disappointment.

If we?re judging this based on vocal talent, Drew and Melanie Amaro are the clear winners. But week after week, Drew came out singing these sad, soulful, angsty and sappy ballads. Every one, taken individually, was very good. But because she did the same thing every week, it was easy for people to tire of her.

The eliminated contestants took the news very differently. Astro, who went on a rant the last time he was in the bottom two, seemed cheerful at his exit. ?I wish you all the best of luck Team L.A. Reid!? he yelled, thanking his ?Astronauts? and promising to be back.

Drew, meanwhile, interrupted her sobbing to blurt out ?Jesus loves all of you guys. I haven?t gotten to say that, and that?s what I?m here for, and that?s what I truly was in this competition for, and now I?m saying it.?

Sadly, it came as she was saying goodbye.

Israel says Egyptian election results 'disturbing' (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Israel's defense minister said Saturday that initial results from Egypt's parliamentary elections are "very, very disturbing."

Few official results have been released from the first round vote, but leaked counts point to a clear majority for Islamist parties led by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said he hopes Egypt's first parliament to be seated after the ouster of longtime leader Hosni Mubarak will respect international treaties, including its shaky 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

Israel's main fear is the Muslim Brotherhood, which has been cool to the peace treaty and has close ties with the ruling Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip. The election is being held in stages and the final outcome won't be known until next year.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Lior Ben Dor said Israel is not surprised by the Muslim Brotherhood's initial election gains and is convinced the Israel-Egypt peace treaty will remain intact.

"We respect the election results in Egypt. This is the Egyptian people's choice," Ben Dor said.

In a statement on a Hamas website, top Hamas official Moussa Abu Marzouk said that "the Egyptian people have voiced their confidence in the Islamists. ... We do believe that Egyptian support in the future will be more for our cause."

Paisley to hang with Urban after his vocal surgery (AP)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? No one has spoken to Keith Urban since his surgery last week to remove a polyp on his vocal cord.

That's because the country star is on complete vocal rest for the next couple of weeks.

Friend Brad Paisley has checked in with Urban, and they have plans to hang out while Urban recovers.

"We're big guitar junkies, and we wanted to get together and maybe go through some amplifiers and go through some gear," said Paisley before the CMT Artists of the Year taping on Tuesday in Nashville. "I told him, `Let's do that. You don't have to talk. We'll get together. We'll play guitar, set up some amps, go through some tubes, try some stuff out and tweak.' I'll do all the talking, which I am very capable of. He can just nod and grunt and do whatever he's allowed to do."

Paisley said he can't imagine what it's like to not be able to talk for weeks. But he thinks Urban's wife, actress Nicole Kidman, should take full advantage of the situation.

"I'm sure Nicole loves it. It's got to be great for her," he joked.

Before heading into surgery, Urban posted a video for fans, thanking them for their gifts and well wishes. He said he looks forward to seeing fans in 2012.

An earlier statement from Urban's publicist called the surgery a minor outpatient procedure. Urban postponed his "All For The Hall" concert to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame that was originally scheduled for Jan. 18. He also rescheduled the rest of his 2011 concert dates for next year.

Urban is a four-time Grammy winner with 13 No. 1 hits, including his most recent, "Long Hot Summer."

Unlocking the genetic and molecular mystery of soft-tissue sarcoma

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Scientists at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston have uncovered important molecular and genetic keys to the development of soft-tissue sarcomas in skeletal muscle, giving researchers and clinicians additional targets to stop the growth of these often deadly tumors.

Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study identified two major molecular signaling pathways (the Ras and mTOR pathways) that are common in tumor growth and development. These molecular pathways regulate cell growth and division, two cellular properties whose over-activation are hallmarks of cancer biology.

"In humans, some sarcomas respond to chemotherapy," says lead author Amy J. Wagers, PhD, an associate professor of stem cell and regenerative biology at Harvard Medical School and Joslin Diabetes Center, "but many don't. With these findings, we have vetted a list of new candidate targets whose inhibition may lead to regression of these tumors. "

Many soft-tissue sarcomas, which develop in certain tissues such as bone and muscle, carry specific genetic mutations or unique gene signatures, which can allow scientists to develop more precise, targeted therapies. Wagers and her colleagues engineered a tumor system in mice by introducing into mouse skeletal muscle a cancer-carrying gene, or oncogene, known to cause tumors in humans. They used this engineered system to identify a small set of genes that are active in sarcoma tumors.

There are many different types of soft-tissue sarcomas, which develop in tissues that connect, support or surround other structures and organs, including muscle, tendons, nerves, fat and blood vessels. If diagnosed early, treatment, primarily through surgical removal of the tumor, radiation therapy or chemotherapy, can be effective. If the tumor has spread, however, the tumor can be controlled only for a period of time, but treatment does not often cure the disease.

By inducing these tumors in mice, Wagers says the scientists knew when the tumors would form in the mice and where in the body they would develop, which helped them better understand the molecular and genetic pathways underlying the disease. With this knowledge, researchers may be able to develop new intervention strategies that interfere with these genetic activities and stop the growth of this type of tumor.

"With the engineered system we developed, we can find new fragile points in the tumor to target," says first author Simone Hettmer, MD, a pediatric oncologist at the Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center, who treats children with these tumors. In addition, she adds, the system allows scientists to look at the genetic changes in sarcomas and how they interact with the development of tumors and can be applied to sarcomas in tissues other than skeletal muscle.

Surprisingly, says Wagers, the researchers found they could induce tumors using several different "beginning" cells. The scientists generated tumor cells using stem cell-like cells that go on to make either muscle or other connective tissues. Tumors that develop from muscle cells were rhabdomyosarcomas, the most common form of soft-tissue sarcoma seen in children, while tumors that developed from non-muscle cells represented other types of sarcoma.

Wagers and her colleagues are now working on establishing a similar engineered model using human cells to test the effectiveness of anti-sarcoma medications. These preclinical experiments are designed to identify the most promising candidates for the treatment of soft-tissue sarcoma that ultimately will be pursued in human clinical trials. Early studies have identified several chemical compounds that, in cell cultures at least, appear to slow the growth of sarcoma cells.
