Thailand furious at Lady Gaga's fake Rolex tweet

BANGKOK -- Thailand's government is up in arms over a tweet by pop sensation Lady Gaga about buying a fake designer watch in a Bangkok street market and has complained to the United States.

Bangkok's sprawling outdoor markets and some of its big shopping malls are widely known for selling near-perfect replicas of famous luxury brands, often imported from China.

Even so, Gaga's May 23 tweet, two days ahead of a sellout concert in Bangkok, struck a raw nerve with some Thais who said the zany artist had dented the country's reputation by suggesting she could easily get her hands on a fake Rolex watch.

The Grammy Award winner, who cancelled a concert after threats in Indonesia and faced protests by conservative groups in the Philippines and South Korea, has not apologized for the tweet, which Thailand's Commerce Ministry said undermined its efforts to stamp out piracy.

"Lady Gaga is a representative of the U.S. and the U.S. puts pressure on smaller countries to promote the protection of intellectual property," an official at the ministry's Intellectual Property Department told Reuters, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

"She should tell her fans that they shouldn't use fake goods."

Gaga's comment stirred debate on Thai web forums and social media. A small protest took place in Bangkok's business district but that failed to keep fans away from her much-anticipated show on Friday, which attracted 50,000 people.

Gaga's contentious tweet to her 24 million followers said: "I just landed in Bangkok baby! Ready for 50,000 screaming Thai monsters. I wanna get lost in a lady market and buy a fake rolex."

She was believed to be referring to the popular Ladies' Market in Hong Kong.

Officials at the U.S. embassy in Bangkok were unavailable for comment.

SOMERSWORTH, New Hampshire ?? It's not quite fly fishing or hiking, but welding is the latest merit badge Boy Scouts can earn - part of a full-court press to attract fresh talent to the critical occupation.

More than 140,000 new welders will be needed by 2019 to replace retirees and meet rising demand from natural gas drillers, steel producers, automakers and more, according to the American Welding Society (AWS).

The group helped the Boy Scouts of America award its first welding merit badge in March, hoping to offset waning interest in welding due to a cultural focus on four-year liberal arts degrees at the expense of community colleges and trade schools, industry experts say.

"The Scouts start realizing that welding could lead to a viable career," said Sam Gentry of the AWS. "It's not just something to fix a fence."

Among the roughly 450,000 U.S. welders, the average age is 55, and fewer than 20 percent are under the age of 35, according to AWS data.

Starting pay for welders is $45,000 per year. Welding engineers - those with advanced degrees - typically have a starting annual salary of $100,000.

Contrast that with the median U.S. annual household income of $49,445, according to the Census Bureau.

Welding, though, is not the cushiest job.

The roughly 2,800 degrees Fahrenheit needed to weld, the sparks, and the painstakingly slow process - it can take hours to weld only a few feet - do little to endear this skilled trade to notoriously impatient youth.

Some older welders have delayed retirement because of the weak economy, prompting concern that when they finally decide to hang up their welding guns, there won't be enough younger welders to replace them, said Kelly Zelesnik, dean of engineering technologies at Lorain County Community College in northeastern Ohio.

"The fear is that we're going to lose a lot of talented welders and welding technicians and not have anyone to back-fill the jobs," she said.

In addition to the Boy Scouts partnership, the AWS has boosted the amount in scholarships it doles out each year.

It also built a $500,000 trailer equipped with "virtual" welding machines with the help of Lincoln Electric Holdings Inc. Last weekend, the machine made a pit stop at the Indianapolis 500 car race to tout the welding profession to young auto fans.

The machines mimic the touch, sight and sound of the welding process - everything except the pungent smell of smoke from molten metal, known as a fume plume.

There are several types of welding, but generally the process involves using a gas-powered heat torch to combine two pieces of metal by melting another piece of metal -- usually in wire or stick form -- between them.

Automation has been able to replicate part of the process -- carmakers, for instance, rely heavily on machine welders -- but human precision and the ability to react quickly if circumstances change remain crucial for most welding operations.

Training typically involves a two-year degree to gain practical experience in welding, but students can go on to get a four-year degree and become welding engineers to focus on design and welding theory.

"We don't believe we're graduating enough welders," said Monica Pfarr, a welding industry consultant. "A lot of companies are having trouble finding the skilled employees they need."

Frackers worry
While the welding shortage has prompted concern from heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar Inc, automaker General Motors and defense contractor Lockheed Martin, the fracking industry is even more worried.

Even among current welders, there is a stark need for pipeline welders, those who can build the lines that will transport natural gas from America's growing shale fields.

"When you weld pipeline, it's an even more complex process than traditional welding," said Corky DeMarco, executive director of the West Virginia Oil and Natural Gas Association. "We are trying to train the next generation of welders who know a range of skills."

David Seaton, CEO of engineering firm Fluor Corp, is concerned about labor costs and supply as his company helps build new chemical plants, pipelines, refineries and other large projects needing welders.

"I started in the construction field, and I've always enjoyed that," Seaton said. "But I don't think we in the industry have done a really good job of educating that next wave of talent on the benefits of a long-term career in our market."

There are small signs the industry's efforts are paying off.

The Boy Scouts have already run out of their first printing of 11,000 welding training manuals, which cost about $5 each.

Using the book, which outlines safety procedures, welding techniques and career potential, and through hands-on training in welding, Scouts can earn the badge in as little as 12 hours, the group says.

"Boys like discovering things, exploring things with their hands," said Boy Scouts spokeswoman Renee Fairrer. "Something like welding is of interest to boys because it's not necessarily something they see as part of their everyday existence."

A representative for the Girl Scouts of the USA wasn't available to comment on a potential welding merit badge for the group's members.

Risk and reward
Welding can be dangerous: 79 U.S. welders were killed on the job in 2010, more than miners, roofers and electricians, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Underwater welding is consistently ranked as one of the most dangerous professions. (It may have something to do with strapping an oxygen tank to your back while using an open flame.)

That being said, many students have job offers even before they graduate.

Zelesnik, the Lorain County Community College dean, advises her students to resist the temptation to drop out after only one or two classes to get a paycheck right away.

"They could be earning a lot more money if they think of welding as a career and not just think about being proficient in a process to get the next raise or job," she said.

Alex Bartels, a high school senior in New Hampshire, tried welding for the first time earlier this year by donning a leather apron and thick metal goggles to help his father repair a trailer frame in his family's New Hampshire driveway.

The long, tedious process did not endear welding to Bartels as a career choice.

That perception is something the industry is going to have to address if it hopes to attract fresh talent.

"Welding would be a great side job," said Bartels, who plans to enlist in the U.S. Army this fall and hopes to join the military police. "But it gets real boring, real fast."

• On May 26, a Florida anesthesiologist allegedly banged his head against the inside of a cop car until he started bleeding following a DUI arrest. He then proceeded to allegedly spit blood in a police officer's face, according to ABC News.

"Callida Junctura"?that what Horace said was at the root of all inventions?"beautiful joinings." What could be more beautiful than the joining of two of tech's hottest commodities?Pinterest and Instagram? That's exactly the idea behind Pinstagram (free). More than just a Web portal for your Instagram account (wait, wouldn't that be something Facebook might want to try?), Pinstagram is surprisingly slick, considering it started as a gag by the co-founders of Tapisto.com. iPad and Mac apps are coming, according to the site's makers.

Signup, Setup, Interface
To get started with Pinstagram, you simply sign in with your Instagram (Free, 3 stars) credentials and allow the site access to your info and actions in the photo social network. A mini-wizard then hand-holds you through the simple interface's seven buttons at top right, for feed and Facebook and Twitter sharing settings. A search bar lets you search for any photos from Instagram. Aside from Twitter and Facebook share buttons at the bottom, there's nothing more to the interface to distract from the meat of your Instagram feed.

On first view my subscribed photo entries filled five columns, but if I resized the browser window smaller or larger this number would decrease or increase from one to as many as my display width would allow. Infinite scrolling behavior means you don?t have to click a Next Page link to proceed down through the photo feed. Clicking on a photo (which on the computer is already about the same size as it would be on your iPhone or other mobile) opens it into a large square view that's more enjoyable than the cramped iPhone view.

The meat of Pinstagram is your Instagram feed, beautifully displayed in the Pinterest-style waterfall view. I much prefer this to competitor Webstagram's single column of photos with their large comment boxes to the right. Pinstagram's larger individual photo view is also better, though Webstagram does offer a large lightbox view and an original size view that open separate Web pages; Pinstagram's large view is a more convenient pop-over window. The last nail in the coffin for Webstagram, though, is its obtrusive ads.

Just as in the Instagram iPhone app, you can click on user handles and hash tags to see more photos from a particular user or on a topic. Once you're on a user's page, buttons let you follow them and see how many followers they have. But you can't browse the list of these follows as you can in the app (actually a useful way to discover users you'd want to follow). Also as in the app, Pinstagram's Popular button, a star, shows the service's top liked photos, also with infinite scrolling. A final great way to discover photos on a topic of interest is Pinstagram's search bar.

Interface isn't the only thing Pinstagram takes the lead from Pinterest on: You can also "pin" photo entries to Pinterest (Free, 3.5 stars) itself. To pin, you choose a category in the popup?Books Worth Reading, Favorite Places, My Style, and so on?and enter any comments you have below the pre-inserted photo title. ?If you choose to in Settings, you can have any of your likes in the site shared on Facebook or Twitter.

Pinstagram can use your browser's location information to show you nearby Instagram photos, thus adding a capability that you'll find in neither Instagram nor Pinterest. Each time I clicked this option, my browser's location-sharing permission box kicked in, and after okaying this, I saw local Instagram photos?though not in infinite scrolling view.

The chief downside of Pinstagram: It's only one way?there's no way to add photos to your Instagram stream, though it's understandable that Instagram itself would want to keep control over this. And because Pinstagram is so new, you may encounter the occasional instance of flakey behavior: I occasional couldn't get the Local view to reload, and sometimes experienced an unduly long timer-spinner.

Pinstagram lifts the biggest restriction from Instagram?the requirement of a mobile phone to view it. True, you can't post new pictures through the new site, but you get all of Instagram's viewing options and more. Seeing the photos in larger Web size is often more gratifying than on the small mobile screen, and now the Pinterest fans can pin their photos. Instagram and Pinterest fans alike need to take Pinstagram out for a spin: despite a few glitches, it does a fine job of uniting the concepts and content of both.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senators investigating the Secret Service prostitution scandal said Wednesday that dozens of reported episodes of misconduct by agents point to a culture of carousing in the agency and urged Director Mark Sullivan to get past his insistence that the romp in Cartagena was a one-time mistake.

The disconnect between the senators and Sullivan reappeared again and again throughout the two-hour hearing, even as the Secret Service chief for the first time apologized for the incident that tarnished the elite presidential protection force. By the end, Sullivan's job appeared secure even as new details emerged that left little doubt, senators said, that a pattern of sexual misbehavior had taken root in the agency.

"He kept saying over and over again that he basically does think this was an isolated incident and I don't think he has any basis for that conclusion," said Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, the senior Republican on the Homeland Security panel that heard Sullivan's first public accounting of the episode.

"For the good of the Secret Service," added Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, the panel chairman, "he's got to assume that what happened in Cartagena was not an isolated incident or else it will happen again." Still, Sullivan insisted repeatedly that in his 29-year Secret Service career he had never heard anyone say that misconduct was condoned, implicitly or otherwise.

"I just do not think that this is something that is systemic within this organization," Sullivan said.

The misconduct became public after a dispute over payment between a Secret Service agent and a prostitute at a Cartagena hotel on April 12. The Secret Service was in the Colombian coastal resort for a Latin American summit before Obama's arrival. Twelve employees were implicated, eight of them ousted, three cleared of serious misconduct and one is being stripped of his security clearance. Sullivan said two who initially resigned now are fighting for their jobs back.

"These individuals did some really dumb things," Sullivan told the Senate panel. "I'm hoping I can convince you that it isn't a cultural issue."

He didn't make much progress on that front, as senators offered fresh evidence of what they considered reckless behavior. Lieberman said 64 allegations or complaints of sexual misconduct were made against Secret Service employees in the last five years.

Three of those, Lieberman said, were complaints of inappropriate relationships with a foreign national and one of "nonconsensual intercourse," on which he didn't have enough information to elaborate. Sullivan said that complaint was investigated by outside law enforcement officers, who decided not to prosecute.

Thirty other cases involved alcohol, Lieberman said, almost all relating to driving under the influence.

Sullivan also told the committee an agent was fired in a 2008 Washington prostitution episode, after trying to hire an uncover police officer.

Charles Edwards, the inspector general at the Homeland Security Department conducting his own probe, and Sullivan discussed an episode from the 2002 Olympics when at least three agents were caught in a rowdy, drunken party in the agents' hotel rooms with college-age women under 21, the legal drinking age.

They were accused of plying the women with alcohol, and two were accused of but not charged with sexual misconduct. One agent was charged with disorderly conduct. The agents involved left the Secret Service, Edwards and Sullivan said.

Against that backdrop, Colombia was probably not an aberration, lawmakers said.

"It's just hard to believe that this is just a one-time occurrence," said Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis.

But Sullivan stuck to that reasoning, pointing out that the dozen agents and supervisors implicated in the Colombia incident were a tiny fraction of the agency's 7,000 employees.

"I can understand how the question could be asked," Sullivan said, calling his employees "among the most dedicated, hardest-working, self-sacrificing employees within the federal government."

He also told senators that Obama's security was never at risk. The officers implicated in the prostitution scandal could not have inadvertently disclosed sensitive security details because their confidential briefing about Obama's trip had not taken place.

"At the time the misconduct occurred, none of the individuals involved in the misconduct had received any specific protective information, sensitive security documents, firearms, radios or other security-related equipment in their hotel rooms," Sullivan said.

Collins dug in. She pointed out that several small groups of Secret Service employees separately visited clubs, bars and brothels and engaged in sexual and other conduct that could have exposed them to blackmail or coercion by foreign intelligence service, drug cartels or others.

She noted that two participants were Secret Service supervisors ? one with 21 years of service and the other with 22 years ? and both were married. Their involvement "surely sends a message to the rank and file that this kind of activity is tolerated on the road," Collins said. Nor, she said, did they try to hide their activities. The agents signed themselves and their guests into the hotel registry.

Both she and Lieberman seized on Sullivan's account of a government-wide survey taken that found only about 60 percent of Secret Service agents said they would report misconduct by their colleagues.

Lieberman told the hearing it is impossible to establish a historical pattern of Secret Service conduct from what is known so far.

But he said: "It is hard for many people, including me, to believe that on one night in April 2012 in Cartagena, Colombia, 11 Secret Service agents ? there to protect the president ? suddenly and spontaneously did something they or other agents had never done before."

Prostitution is legal in Colombia, but Sullivan quickly issued new guidelines that made it clear that agents on assignment overseas are subject to U.S. laws.
